By Chris Ogden, Chairman Fort Mill Democratic Forum
The cost of health care has become astronomical and will only get worse unless our leaders act now. I urge my fellow constituents to call and write members of Congress and tell them, “Enough already.” The time to act has arrived. We need this legislation now more then ever. We can’t afford to wait another year; we can’t afford to wait another four.
As the cost of medications goes through the roof and the cost of simple procedures is beginning to be denied by insurance companies as routine procedures, the time to act is now. As our senior citizens must decide whether to buy food or their medications, and as families are being squeezed with smaller paychecks and the growing cost of food, gas and other necessities, the last thing they need is to have to worry about how they will afford this financial tsunami. When it comes to all the routine bills and then the a sudden medical bill that a family may not have coverage for or their insurance may deny the claim, the time is now.
As the president has repeatedly said, he will not sign any legislation that increases the deficit. So we need to encourage our leaders in Congress to stop the partisan politics and get down to the business of the day. We need to encourage our leaders that this is what we want and need.
I know that there are many people out there who believe that this reform legislation is going to become a government takeover of the health care system, but it is not. Our leaders in Washington want to allow us to be able to choose between private health care insurance companies or take the government healthcare insurance company if we can’t get one or can’t afford the private health care companies any longer. Furthermore, the president wants to do away with denial of coverage for preexisting conditions. The time to act is now.
